Are Van breakfast and serpme breakfast the same?
The names describe different things. Van refers to the regional breakfast tradition; serpme describes the spread of dishes brought to the table for sharing. GoTürkiye’s account of Van breakfast highlights herb cheese and regional dishes including murtuğa and kavut. A restaurant’s use of the name does not tell you its exact selection. For your meal at Pusula, the shared breakfast’s menu description is the place to check.
Start with the cheeses
Our shared breakfast lists Van herb cheese, white cheese, braided cheese, village cheese and fresh kaşar. These are different cheese varieties, so try a little of each rather than treating the plate as one ingredient. The English menu keeps Turkish names such as kaşar alongside explanations, making it easier to point out the cheese you want to ask about. The menu does not document producers or certification; a regional name alone is not evidence of a certified origin.
Honey, kaymak and tahini with molasses
Kaymak is clotted cream, listed alongside honey. Tahini with grape molasses is another accompaniment, separate from the honey and cream. The spread also lists olive salad, black and green olives, jam, tomato and cucumber. Read these as part of the meal when deciding how much to order. The individual dishes have different accompaniments: the pişi plate, for example, lists tulum cheese rather than the spread’s full selection of cheeses.
Hot dishes on the shared table
Menemen and pan-fried eggs are listed in Pusula’s shared Van breakfast. Gözleme, omelette and the pişi plate are listed separately. Murtuğa and kavut are not listed in our current menu, so they are not included in the description of this spread. If you came for a particular hot dish, look at its own menu entry: plain menemen and kavurma menemen have different descriptions and prices. This is more useful than assuming everything in a general breakfast photograph comes with one order.
Tea and choosing a portion
Choose a shared portion for two, three or four guests. Unlimited tea is listed with the spread, and each displayed price is the total for that portion. Visiting alone? Compare the individual breakfast plate and the pişi plate; their contents differ from the spread. Tea is listed with the breakfast plate and is not listed with the pişi plate. Compare the hot dishes, cheeses and drinks as well as the headline price.
